Why most online valuations are wrong

The typical “number plate valuation tool” you find online is a lookup on the DVLA's own reserve price. That number has almost nothing to do with what a plate is actually worth on the open market. A plate like F 1 would score a few hundred pounds; in reality it has traded for millions.

Plate Base was built to fix that. Our engine looks at the plate the way a serious buyer or dealer would — what word it spells, whose initials it matches, which car model or brand it references, how rare its format is, and what comparable plates are actually selling for right now.

What we look at

  • Structure and rarity — dateless single-letter/single-digit plates are treated very differently from a modern 3-letter, 3-digit issue.
  • Visual Plate Recognition Score (VPRS) — decodes leet substitutions (5→S, 1→I, 0→O) so K1 NGS and KIN 95 both surface as “KINGS”.
  • Automotive recognition — brands, models, engine codes and enthusiast references (R8, GT3, 911, M3, AMG).
  • Iconic / trophy anchors — “grail” plates are floored at their true collector value, not the DVLA reserve.
  • Live comparables — we scan the major UK marketplaces daily so your estimate reflects today's asking prices, not last year's.

What you get back

A single-page valuation report with a headline estimate, low/likely/high range, a plain-English explanation of the drivers, a liquidity score (how quickly it should sell), a price ladder and a shortlist of comparable plates currently for sale. If you want, one click submits it for sale with Plate Base.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Plate Base valuation free?
Yes. Enter any UK registration and you get an instant, no-obligation estimate. There is no sign-up requirement and we never sell your data to third parties.
How accurate is the estimate?
Every valuation is triangulated across live marketplace listings, DVLA auction results, historical private sales and our proprietary Visual Plate Recognition Score (VPRS). Confidence bands make the uncertainty explicit.
Do you value dateless, prefix, suffix and current-style plates?
Yes. Our engine detects the format automatically and applies the appropriate rarity, prestige and liquidity model.
Can you value initials, names or car-related plates?
Yes. Dedicated layers score initials, first names, brands, model codes and cultural references — the same signals a serious dealer would use.
Will you buy my plate?
We do not make cash offers directly. Once you have a valuation you can sell your plate through Plate Base and reach genuine private buyers.
